Culture Corner: Spotlight on Rio de Janeiro

Welcome to Rio de Janeiro (River of January), so named because the first explorers came to the harbor in January and mistakenly thought it was a river mouth.

As Brazil gears up for the 2016 Olympic Games on August 5th, we wanted to share some insights to this cidade maravilhosa (wonderful city) of Must See Wonders and, of course esportes (keep track of Sports Schedule and Results).  Whether you are an sports’ fan or planning to visit Brasil in the near future for any reason now is a great time to start some Portuguese Group Classes or try out our Portuguese Travel Crash Course.

To get you started, here are some dicas (tips) that can help you become more familiar with the Brazilian way:

  • DON'T wear yellow and green together.  Unless you are at a match and rooting for the home team. Otherwise, you’ll just look like you’re trying too hard.
  • DO expect meals to last long. Lunch itself can last over two hours.
  • DON’T eat pizza with your hands. Use a knife and fork for every meal.
  • DON'T make the "OK" sign with your hand. It's the equivalent of the proverbial bird. Thumbs up should make the point.
